Khonoma is a pristine village situated in the Japfu mountain range; well, this part of India is not very much explored as compared to the other places of oriental region but, with its wide variety of bird species Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary can be designated as one of the birding heavens of Northeast India. The Angami tribes of this region have hunted the birds for centuries but due to high coservation efforts they have now stopped poaching and have become more sincere regarding the protection and conseravtion of these beautiful bird species.
You get some range restricted bird species of Indo-Malaya region so, a well planned birding and bird photography tour to this place can yeild multiple number of exotic sightings of some rarest of rare bird species and quality photographs of the same.
The magnificence of the place is spell binding, the lovely bamboo thickets, the deep dark dense forests lures one to explore it and know the secrets it has been hiding from the world for years. As stated earlier Japfu mountain range is an integral part of Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary and the notable range restricted bird species found here are: Mountain bamboo Partridge and Assam Laughingthrush. Day 1 - We gather at Dimapur Airport or Railway station (or nearby places) as per the convenience of our guest and by noon we will start for Khonoma. A drive of around 3 and half hours will take us to our home stay, which is situated just outside the sanctuary and owing to this there is a great chance of observing various bird species like Grey Sibia, Silver-eared Mesia etc. Birds will be delighted by the enchanting sight of the Crested Finchbill - a beautiful looking birds from south Assam hills; which lives in the wild apple trees, that grow beside the Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary [KNCTS] birding trail. Dinner will be serve early and over dinner we will plan our course of action for the next few days, before we retire to our beds.
Day 2 - Early in the morning we will walk to Mesoma and move forward enjoying the habitat and looking for the bird sighting and photography opportunities. We will return to our home stay for lunch and thereafter we will go back to the sanctuary again, making our way through shrubs and undergrowth in search of the jewel of the jewels of Khonoma, the Mountain Bamboo Partridge and watch the lovely flight of the Dark-rumped Swifts (endangered category) aloft.
Day 3 - Today again we will start at the break of day looking for the Mountain Bamboo Partridge; we shall try to get some other comely birds like - Red-faced Liocichla, Assam Laughingthrush, Striped Laughingthrush, Rusty-capped Fulvetta etc. The awe of this magical cloud forest will surely gift us some extraordinary sightings and yield a myriad of photographs. After an amazing day of birding again back to the pavilion. For freshening up, discussing about our field visit, sharing the wholesome birding experience etc.
Day 4 & Day 5 - We will witness the most magnificent migrant bird all over the world - Amur Falcon. We will witness lakhs of birds in 30 minutes session at Pangti. Overnight we will stay at Wokha and will drive back on 4th November to Khonoma. Meanwhile, our search for birds in the bush thickets would add few more to the checklist.
Day 6 - Today we will venture into the forest for one last time (last full day birding jaunt) and try our luck with skittish and rare birds of Nagaland. In these past few days we have been spending ample amount of time both on the field and off the field; which has facilitated us to gather knowledge about the nitty-gritties of photographing the Naga birds, their behavior pattern etc, which will be prove beneficial for you in our other wildlife tours.
Day 7 - Post breakfast we will have a short birding session, for two hours, thereafter we will check out of our home stay of Khonoma and will be transferred back to Dimapur. Having enjoyed an eventful and fruitful trip filled with learning sharing caring fun enjoyment adventure and lifetime experience we will return to our respective homes, diluted with tales of Nagaland to tell and pictures to share.
Tour cost for two participants is Rs 1,10,000/- and for three participants is Rs 1,25,000/- only for Indian Nationals.
This is an indicative cost that might increase if the forest administrative charges are increased.
Tour cost includes:
- Accommodation in homestays on twin sharing basis
- All meals as per the itinerary
- All surface transfer in SUVs as per the itinerary
- All forest entry fees, Inner Line Permit fee, guide charges, etc.
- Service of a dedicated wildlife photographer and naturalist for the entire tour
